STRUCK TABLE

This table was crafted in partnership with Jake Rudin, under the mentorship of Roberto Bertoia, a renowned sculpture and furniture artist.

The table itself was made from a walnut tree that had been struck by lightening, felled, and seasoned at the fabrication site.

Taking advantage of the material scarring from the lightning strike, we highlighted the charred wood as a design element, using that to inform the choice of forged steel as the base to support the wooden top.
We expressed the materials through layering and exposed details, to highlight the nature of the table as well as celebrate the overall use. This also allowed us to incorporate expansion of the table.
The table itself can expand and contract, allowing for dynamic use. The surface can transform as a linear surface between two chairs, to a larger, more angular spread to support more objects or other layouts.
